Newark Air Force Base, Heath, Ohio, the home of the Aerospace Guidance
& Metrology Center for a quarter century plus, achieved organizational
excellence. During its 34 years of operation it was acclaimed by the highest
order of government it served for its exceptional meritorious service. The
center's former employees may stand proud for the many honors bestowed
upon
themselves and their community. Their record of voluntary service, contribution
and support for the communities of Heath and Newark during the period of base
operation will go unmatched for may years to come.
The former heavy press facility opened in December 1962. It became know as the Aerospace Guidance & Metrology Center, "A Center of Excellence" in 1968. During the years of the "Cold War" and the "The Missile Era" it became one of the most strategic technology centers in the free world.
It was the Cadillac and showplace for the inertial navigation
and metrology technical communities. Its VIP visitors were many and who came
from all parts of the world to see this plant in the middle of Ohio.
But, as the world turns, on September 17, 1996, the base closed to give way to privatization of its one-of-a-kind resources to commercial enterprise.
