The Atlas and Titan ICBM Inertial Systems were the first missile production systems processed by the Station for Depot level repair and test. These workloads were short lived, with the Atlas terminating in February 1964 and Titan by the 1980's. The first Minuteman I System work began in October 1962 and MM II in November 1966. In 1966 alone, Newark AFS repaired over 1,700 Missile Inertial Guidance Systems and by the fall of 1966, its 3,000th MM I System had been repaired and returned to the operating agencies.
This introductory segment of
early ICBM inertial systems production only scratches the surface of what's to
follow in the next few weeks and months ahead. Unsurpassed production
records and improved reliability of equipment that was so vital to the nation
during the "Cold War" encounter is what helped to make this
installation a "Center of Excellence".
Find out about the "not operationally
ready" condition of the Minuteman II that almost shut down the entire
United States ballistic missile ready fleet. Also, how Newark AFS managed
to help eliminate a national emergency.
During the weeks and months ahead the page will be updated frequently to include photos and stories of production records involving missiles, aircraft and inter-service programs. Photos of groups of those involved during those exciting years will be plentiful and will get your memory bank of history up and running at full speed.
